Steven’s involvement with Walking Football 4 Me began in April 2024 when he joined as a participant, drawn by his lifelong passion for football. Having played the sport in various capacities over the years, Steven was eager to get back into the game, even if it was in a more relaxed and accommodating format like walking football. What he hadn’t anticipated, however, was the profound impact this decision would have on both his personal development and the wider community.

From the outset, Steven expressed his enthusiasm not only for participating in the sessions but also for contributing in a more meaningful way. He quickly shared with the Foundation his desire to volunteer, motivated by a strong sense of giving back to the community and helping others enjoy the sport as much as he does. Recognising his passion and potential, the Foundation conducted the necessary background checks and assessments to ensure that Steven was well-suited for a volunteer role.

With everything in place, Steven began his volunteering journey, and it wasn’t long before his presence became a cornerstone of the weekly sessions. Each week, Steven’s confidence blossomed, and he took on increasingly significant responsibilities. Initially, he supported the coaches with setting up the sessions and engaging with participants, but over time, he began to take a more active role in leading activities and facilitating games.

One of the key figures who has witnessed Steven’s growth is Luke, a school sports coach who works at the Foundation and helps deliver this project. Luke noted, “Steven has been instrumental in the success of our Friday sessions. His enthusiasm is contagious, and his supportive nature has made a real difference to the other participants. Whether it’s offering words of encouragement or helping to demonstrate drills, Steven’s leadership skills have developed remarkably. He’s not just a volunteer; he’s a role model for many of our participants.”

For Steven, the benefits of his involvement go beyond leadership and community impact. The sessions have provided him with an opportunity to reconnect with the sport he loves in a supportive environment tailored to his needs. Steven lives with non-visible disabilities and walking football has offered him a unique way to stay active and engaged without the physical strain of traditional football. He has found camaraderie among fellow participants, many of whom share similar challenges, creating a sense of belonging that has enriched his experience.

Reflecting on his journey, Steven shared, “Being part of Walking Football 4 Me has been incredibly rewarding. I’ve not only been able to enjoy playing football again, but I’ve also gained a lot from volunteering. It’s been great to help others and see them improve each week. The sessions have really brought people together, and it’s amazing to be a part of that.”

Steven’s story is a testament to the power of sport in fostering personal growth, community connection, and inclusivity. Through Walking Football 4 Me, he has not only rediscovered his love for the game but has also become a vital contributor to a community that values support, encouragement, and shared experiences. His journey continues to inspire others, proving that with the right opportunities, passion and commitment can lead to profound personal and communal transformation.
