As part of the EFL Week of Action, we caught up with Jules, a member of our Walking Football group, about the significant positive impact of walking football, with a specific focus on their enhanced fitness levels and improved mental well-being.

Join us as we explore Jules’ journey and the effects this sport has had on their overall health.

How did you first get involved in the walking football sessions, and what motivated you to join?

I first heard about the walking football sessions through the Posh Foundation website. I was looking to get involved with football as a form of exercise and to meet new people.

Can you describe any physical improvements you’ve noticed since participating in the program?

I have noticed my fitness levels improve significantly since the summer purely by attending almost every week. I’m feeling healthier, stronger, and generally better about myself through this form of burning calories (burning calories is often boring and rubbish). I love it!!

In what ways has walking football positively impacted your mental well-being? Have you noticed any changes in your mood, stress levels, or overall mental health?

Yes. My general health and mood have improved tremendously.  My mental health is very important to me and has to be closely monitored daily. Meeting new people and putting Monday evenings as a priority for my well-being has proven to be extremely beneficial to my health and how I view myself as a person. A person committing to something that overall has a positive outcome and is rewarding to my mood state. I always feel great after a session and can’t wait for the next one.

Have you noticed any positive changes in your overall quality of life since starting the walking football sessions?

Simply by noticing an improvement in my health, strength, and energy levels, I have now started going to the gym more regularly. It’s definitely been a snowball effect for me personally. And as a result of that, I’m also monitoring what I eat more and sleeping better too. Basically, from starting walking football in the summer to now, I have managed to change my lifestyle completely for the better. It has been so rewarding for me. Definitely one of the best choices I have made in years.

Are there any specific moments or achievements in the programme that stand out to you as particularly meaningful or impactful?

I enjoy all of it to be honest. Whether its 5 a side or full pitch 11v11 etc.. I particularly like how everyone looks out for one another by stopping play if someone falls etc… It’s all fun and competitive in a good way. Good vibes. And of course, I remember my first goal and my best goal… those are always specific moments that are meaningful.

Can you share any advice or encouragement for individuals who might be considering joining a walking football session’s but are hesitant?

I strongly recommend this to anyone. Whether you enjoy football and have played all your life, or you’ve never played it and want to come along to get some exercise and meet new people. It’s fun for all involved and whether you know football or not, it shouldn’t be a reason not to join in. If you don’t try it, you won’t know. It’s fun and it’s free. Give it a shot!
